Student learning to ride an e-foil with an instructor in calm water

Want to learn to fly over the water? An e-foil lesson in Barcelona is the fastest and safest way to get there: with a dedicated instructor, most people lift above the water within their first hour. Here’s exactly how it works, what it costs and what to expect from your first session.

What an e-foil lesson looks like, step by step

A first lesson always follows the same progression, designed to build confidence without scares:

  1. Meeting point and boat transfer. You meet at Port Olímpic (local M13) and a boat takes you out to the riding area, away from swimmers and traffic.
  2. Briefing (10 minutes). The instructor explains how the board works, the hand throttle, how to fall properly (spoiler: just into the water) and the signals you’ll use at sea.
  3. Riding lying down. You start lying on the board, surf-style, throttling up gently. This is where you learn to feel the motor’s push.
  4. Kneeling. Once you control the speed, you ride on your knees. Most people reach this stage within 10–15 minutes.
  5. Standing, planing. You stand up with the board still on the water, like a small motorboat. You work on posture: feet apart, knees bent, eyes forward.
  6. The first flight. With a stable stance, you add one more notch of throttle and the hydrofoil does its magic: the board lifts off the water and suddenly everything goes silent. It’s a moment you don’t forget.

The instructor is in the water with you for the entire session, correcting your stance and adjusting the difficulty.

How long does it take to learn?

Faster than you’d think:

  • First hour: you rise above the water (the vast majority of students manage it).
  • Second hour: gentle turns and control of flight height.
  • 3–4 hours total: you fly independently, link turns and start playing with speed.

Does a background in surfing, skating or snowboarding help? Yes, mostly with balance. Is it essential? Not at all: we teach complete beginners who have never ridden a board in their lives. Falls are part of the process, they happen at low height and into the water, and the instructor is in the water with you throughout.

What’s included (and what it costs)

An e-foil lesson in Barcelona costs from €159 per person for a 1-hour session, everything included:

  • Specialised instructor for the whole session
  • Fliteboard with a charged battery
  • Life vest
  • Boat transfer from Port Olímpic to the riding area
  • Changing rooms, showers and lockers
  • Safety and technique briefing

Sessions run in small groups of up to 4 participants, and instruction is available in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. All you need to bring is a swimsuit and some enthusiasm. And no, you don’t need any licence or sailing qualification: sessions run in an authorised area with a qualified instructor.

Ours runs on the Costa Brava: a private e-foil boat trip from Llafranc, 2 hours, 2 boards, up to 10 people, €500 all included.

Where the lessons happen

Lessons depart from Port Olímpic (local M13): you meet at the port and a boat takes you to the riding area - relatively calm water, a practice zone away from boat traffic and the Barcelona skyline as your backdrop. Port Olímpic is just minutes from the city centre.

On holiday on the Costa Brava? We also run a boat trip from Llafranc: we sail with a skipper and instructor to a quiet cove and run a 2-hour session with 2 e-foil boards (€500 all included, up to 10 people). Requirements to join

The list is short:

  • Confident swimmer
  • Not pregnant and not over 70
  • No serious knee or back injuries

That’s it. No licence, no experience, no athlete-level fitness.

Tips for your first lesson

  • Come rested and unhurried. Balance suffers when you’re tired.
  • Don’t fight the falls. Falling into the water is part of the process and doesn’t hurt; relaxed students learn twice as fast.
  • Eyes on the horizon, not the board. 80% of instructor corrections are this one.
  • Book an early morning slot if you can: the sea is usually flatter and you’ll learn faster.
  • In high season (June–September), book a few days ahead — slots go quickly.

Book your e-foil lesson

This coast is one of the best places in Europe to learn to e-foil: a long season (April to October), warm water and sheltered coves a short boat ride away. Book your e-foil trip on the Costa Brava - 2 hours, 2 boards, up to 10 people, €500 all included with a certified instructor. Want to arrive prepared? Read our complete e-foil guide first.

Most people rise above the water during their first one-hour lesson. By the second session you start turning and controlling flight height with confidence. After 3–4 hours of accumulated practice, most riders fly independently.

Is it hard to ride an e-foil?

Less than it looks. You don't need waves or wind and you control the speed yourself from the hand throttle. The progression is gradual: you ride lying down first, then kneeling, then standing — and only once you're stable does the instructor help you lift off on the foil. Surfing, skating or snowboarding experience helps, but isn't required.
