An e-foil (or efoil) is an electric surfboard with a hydrofoil mounted on the bottom. The hydrofoil is a finned structure that, as the board gains speed, generates hydrodynamic lift and raises the board — and the rider — above the surface of the water.
The motor is fully electric, silent and emission-free. It is controlled with a wireless remote in the rider’s hand that regulates speed.
How does an e-foil work?
Lying on the board, you slowly throttle up. As the board gains speed the hydrofoil generates lift and the board rises above the water. Once flying, you shift your body weight to control height and direction.
In practice the learning curve is surprisingly fast: most people manage to rise above the water on their very first 1-hour session.
Is e-foiling dangerous?
With a certified instructor and safety protocol, e-foiling is a very safe activity. The most common falls are simple dives into the water. At Nautiq Barcelona:

Do you need a licence to ride an e-foil?
No. E-foiling requires no licence, no sailing qualification and no prior experience. At an accredited centre you only need to be a confident swimmer (the activity is not suitable for pregnant women or people over 70). Riding with an accredited centre means the authorised area and the insurance are already sorted for you.
Is e-foiling allowed in Spain?
Yes, e-foiling is fully legal in Spain when practised with an accredited centre in authorised zones. In Barcelona city, local schools hold the municipal and maritime permits and depart from Port Olímpic; our Costa Brava sessions run from a boat in authorised waters off Llafranc.
How fast does an e-foil go?
Top speed on a typical e-foil is around 40–45 km/h, although most beginners cruise comfortably between 20 and 30 km/h. Speed is controlled by the wireless throttle so you stay in full control at all times. A full battery gives around 60–90 minutes of riding, which is more than a first session needs.
Is e-foiling difficult to learn?
It’s not easy at first, but you learn fast. Most people who try e-foil for the first time manage to rise from the water in their first 1-hour session. By the second session you can start turning and controlling direction.
