Things to Do in Barcelona in October: Activities at Sea Once Summer Is Over

Sailboats racing in a corporate regatta off the Barcelona coast in autumn

October in Barcelona is not summer, but it is not winter either. The terraces are still full, there are 23°C days and the sea is still there, ten minutes by metro from the centre. What changes is the kind of plan: the “drop anchor and jump in” trips are over, and peak season for corporate events at sea begins. If you are wondering what to do in Barcelona in October, here is the short answer: fewer swims, more sailing and, if you are coming with your team, a regatta or a team building on a catamaran.

October in Barcelona: what changes compared to summer

  • Air temperature: highs of 20-23°C early in the month and 17-19°C by the end, with lows of 13-16°C.
  • Water temperature: down from 25-26°C in August to around 20-22°C, touching 19°C in the last days of the month.
  • Daylight: the sun sets around 19:30 on 1 October and just before 18:00 on the 31st, because the clocks go back on 25 October.
  • Rain: it is Barcelona’s rainiest month, but the rain comes on specific days and the rest are clear days with great visibility.
  • Crowds: far fewer tourists at Barceloneta and Port Olímpic, and more boats and skippers available.

At sea this means October sailing is comfortable, without August’s punishing sun on deck, and the Mediterranean is usually calm. Getting into the water is a different story.

Swim-stop trips drop off (and that is fine)

Every October we see the same thing: bookings for a private boat trip with a swim stop fall off a cliff. At 21°C the swim still exists, but it is short, and you feel the breeze when you climb out. Most groups prefer to stay on board, cruise past the skyline and have a drink with the coast in the background.

There is an upside. The boats that spend July stacking two-hour trips back to back are free for what really shines in autumn: events for large groups. And hotel and flight prices drop right when companies are closing their Q4 offsites.

The perfect month for a nautical team building

Together with May and June, October is the month we run the most nautical team building events in Barcelona. That is no coincidence:

  • Ideal weather for being on deck. Between 18 and 23°C you sail in a hoodie, with no sunburn or heatstroke during a three-hour activity.
  • Calm sea. Outside the rainy spells, autumn in Barcelona brings light winds and flat water, perfect for people with no experience to take the helm.
  • The whole team is there. By October staggered holidays are over, and September’s new hires bond better on a boat than in a meeting room.
  • Availability and budget. More of the fleet is free than in summer, and the event closes the fiscal year without fighting December’s calendars.

Our events run from 10 to 300 people and start from €1,000 per event, including private boats with professional crew, fuel and insurance, drinks and catering, team challenges and event coordination. If the weather does not cooperate, we reschedule at no cost and let you know 48 hours ahead.

Corporate regatta at Port Olímpic

The corporate regatta is the format we recommend most for October. We split the group into crews of up to 8 people, each with its own sailboat and professional skipper, and they race several heats on a marked course with committee boat and judge. Nobody needs experience: before setting off there is a briefing on safety, weather and rules, and the skipper teaches each crew to hoist, tack and trim.

  • Price: €115 per person (VAT not included)
  • Capacity: up to 300 guests
  • Duration: about 3 hours, ending with the results and a cava toast
  • Includes: fleet of sailboats with skippers, race course, briefing, judge, toast, insurance and fuel

With October light, a regatta that starts at 15:00 ends with the prize-giving just before sunset. Hard to beat that in a conference room.

Team building on a catamaran

If you want a more relaxed event, with the whole group together on one boat, a catamaran hire is the way to go. The catamaran for up to 26 people starts at €810 and lets you combine sailing, team dynamics on deck and an aperitif in front of the city, on 2 to 4 hour trips.

For groups of 30 to 125 people there is the Big Space, the largest events catamaran in Barcelona, from €2,150. Room for presentations, a company lunch, a DJ, or simply for the team to talk about something other than work. And in October the deck is a pleasant place at any hour, not only at sunset.

Fewer than 10 of you?

A small team fits perfectly on a sailboat by the hour for up to 11 people, with the skipper teaching anyone who wants to sail, or on a full-day charter down to the Garraf coves.

What if I still want to swim?

You can, and in the first half of October there are days when you will want to. The private boat trip still leaves Port Olímpic every day: up to 6 people, €150 for 1 hour or €240 for 2 hours, final price with skipper, fuel and drinks included. We anchor just like in summer; the swim just lasts five minutes instead of half an hour.

And the private sunset cruise gets better in October: the sun sets around 19:00 mid-month, so you can do it straight after work, and autumn skies give much cleaner sunsets than August’s haze. €240 for 2 hours for up to 6 people.

Other things to do in Barcelona in October

If you are pairing your day at sea with a few days in the city, October has its own calendar:

  • Barcelona Boat Show: Spain’s biggest boat show runs in mid-October at Port Vell, a short walk from Port Olímpic.
  • Sitges Film Festival: the fantastic film festival, 35 minutes away by train, in the first half of the month.
  • 48h Open House Barcelona: a weekend in late October when buildings normally closed to the public open for free.
  • Barcelona International Jazz Festival: kicks off in October with concerts at the Palau de la Música and venues across the city.
  • La Castanyada: on 31 October, roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets on every corner.

Tips for booking in October

  1. Team buildings and regattas, 2-3 weeks ahead. October is no longer high season, but Fridays fill up.
  2. Pick midday or early afternoon. That is when air and water are warmest, and regattas finish in daylight.
  3. Dress in layers. It is 2-3 degrees cooler at sea than on land. We provide life jackets and drinks; you bring a windbreaker.
  4. Ask about plan B. All our events include free rescheduling if the weather does not allow us to sail.

At Nautiq Barcelona we run regattas, catamaran team buildings and private trips from Port Olímpic all year round. Get in touch with your date and group size and we will send you a fixed quote the same day. October is the month to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you swim in the sea in Barcelona in October?

Yes, especially in the first half of the month: the water sits around 20-22°C, compared with 25-26°C in August. It is a short, refreshing dip, which is why swim-stop boat trips drop off sharply in October. Most groups prefer to sail, watch the sunset or run a team activity instead.

Is October a good month for a nautical team building in Barcelona?

One of the best. Temperatures of 18-23°C, a usually calm sea, more boats and skippers available than in summer, and teams are back from holidays. Our events run from 10 to 300 people from €1,000 per event; corporate regattas take up to 300 guests at €115 per person plus VAT.

What happens if it rains on the day of the event?

October is Barcelona's rainiest month, but the rain tends to fall on specific days and the rest of the month is sunny. We track the forecast and, if conditions are not suitable for sailing, we let you know 48 hours in advance and reschedule at no cost.

What should I wear to sail in October?

Layers: a t-shirt, a hoodie or fleece and a windbreaker. It is 2-3 degrees cooler at sea than on land and it cools down fast at sunset. Rubber-soled shoes, and for regattas we provide the life jackets.
