Private skippered boat cruising the Barcelona coastline - no license needed

Want to get out on the water in Barcelona but don’t have a nautical qualification? Good news: you don’t need one. This guide covers the two ways of boat rental without a licence in Barcelona, what Spanish law actually says, and what each option costs.

Option 1: rent with a skipper (no license, no limits)

The easiest way to enjoy a boat without any qualification is to rent one with a professional skipper. The skipper handles the navigation while you enjoy the trip: swim stops, coves, sunset - whatever you fancy. There’s no limit on boat size or distance, because the skipper holds the licence.

Our skippered options from Port Olímpic:

ExperienceCapacityPrice
Private boat tripUp to 6 guests€150/h final price
Boat charter by the hourUp to 11 guestsFrom €399/2h
Full-day charterUp to 11 guestsFrom €999
Private sunset cruiseUp to 6 guestsFrom €250/2h

Skipper, fuel and drinks are included in every price.

Spanish regulations allow you to helm certain boats with no licence at all:

  • Motorboats: up to 5 metres in length and a maximum of 15 HP (11.26 kW).
  • Sailboats: up to 6 metres in length.
  • Conditions: daytime navigation only, within 2 nautical miles of a port, marina or refuge.

These are the typical “no licence” rentals you see in marinas: small, slow boats limited to the coastal strip. Perfect for a gentle cruise, not enough if you want to reach distant coves or sail with a bigger group.

The titulín: the licence you get in one day

If you want more freedom without studying for the full PER, Spain offers the Licencia de Navegación, known as the titulín.

  • Obtained in one day: 2 hours of theory and 4 hours of practice, no exam.
  • Lets you drive motorboats up to 6 metres in length.
  • Limits: daytime only, up to 2 nautical miles from a port or refuge.

The next steps up are the PNB (up to 8 m and 5 miles) and the PER (up to 15 m and 12 miles), which do require a theory exam.

What if I do have a licence?

We no longer offer self-drive hire: every boat in our fleet comes with a professional skipper, which is why no licence is ever required. If you hold a PER, PNB, RYA Day Skipper or ISPA, you are welcome to take the helm on board with the skipper beside you - many licensed sailors book the sailing yacht by the hour exactly for that.

Not licensed yet but tempted? Start with a skippered day charter: the skipper handles the paperwork and you learn by sailing alongside them.

Which option should you choose?

  • Zero hassle: skippered boat. No licence, no limits, €150/h final price.
  • I want to drive, today: exemption boat (up to 5 m/15 HP) or the one-day titulín.
  • I want to learn: skippered day charter, then get the titulín.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a boat in Barcelona without a license?

Yes, in two ways: rent a boat with a professional skipper (no qualification needed, €150/hour final price), or drive a small boat yourself under the Spanish exemption: motorboats up to 5 m and 15 HP, or sailboats up to 6 m, daytime only and within 2 nautical miles of a port.

What is the Spanish 'titulín' and what does it allow?

The titulín (Licencia de Navegación) is obtained in a single day with a 2-hour theory and 4-hour practical course, no exam. It lets you drive motorboats up to 6 m in length, during daytime and up to 2 nautical miles from a port or refuge.

Do you rent boats without a skipper?

No. Every boat in our fleet sails with a professional skipper included in the price, so no licence is ever needed. If you want to drive yourself, your only option in Barcelona is a small exemption boat (up to 5 m and 15 HP) from an operator that offers them.

How much does a skippered boat rental cost in Barcelona?

The private boat trip costs €150 final price for the first hour (up to 6 guests), the hourly charter from €399/2h (up to 11 guests) and the full-day charter from €999. Skipper, fuel and drinks are included in all options.
